When he is taking time away from work, be it during his tenure at JMI or his new venture as the President of South Coast Partnerships, Inc., John Church enjoys practicing yoga. He finds that it is relaxing, allowing him to unwind from particularly stressful days, but he also recognizes that many people are intimidated by the activity when they first try it. As such, he has the following tips to share.
Start Small
Yoga is all about developing your body, so don’t look at experienced people and assume that you need to be able to match them move for move right from the off. It will take time to gain the flexibility to do some of the more complex routines, so make sure that you work with a trainer that understands you skill level. You should be aiming to push yourself, without going so far that you cause injury.
Commit
If you really want to experience everything that yoga has to offer you, it is important that you commit to practicing on a regular basis. This means finding a teacher that works well with you, sticking with that teacher and attending classes on a regular basis. Eventually, you will reach a point where you can practice yoga on your own with a certain level of proficiency, which is when it becomes less about learning and more about relieving the stresses you experience.

John Church JMI has an inquisitive nature, which served him well during his time at JMI, so he had no issue with asking questions about why he was doing certain things when he first started to learn yoga. He encourages others to be the same, as understanding why you are doing something motivates you to keep doing it in order to improve.
